There are rules for everything in life. That’s pretty obvious. There are rules for driving. Stay in your lane. Don’t cut people off and pay attention to the speed limit. There are a set of guidelines when you are in a working environment. Don’t date your co -workers. Watch what you say. Don’t make any insulting or negative comments. And always try to get along with everyone. Of course there are rules in life. Do the right thing. Help old ladies cross the street. Don’t lie, cheat or steal. When I became an english teacher I had to teach my students many things. I wanted them to learn the great authors. They had to learn how to write great poems and prose. But the number one thing I had to teach them were term paper guidelines.
1.Number one term paper guideline is to understand the basic term paper structure. A paper should include the introduction body and conclusion. The introduction introduces the paper and explains basic points you will be making. This is also the paragraph where we first see the thesis. The subsequent paragraphs go into great detail about the points you just introduced. Allow one paragraph per point you hope to make. And one citation per paragraph. This is known as the body of the paper. The last paragraph is the conclusion and concludes the paper. It sums up your paper. Not only is each point reiterated bt the thesis statement is as well.
2.When trying to teach my students the term paper guidelines I had to teach them to cite. There are various citation methods, Harvard, Chicago, MLA and APA. The latter two are the most common. You can use the key below to help you.
For APA use this:
Last name, first name. (year published).Title of Book. City published. Publisher
For the in text citation use this method:
(Last name, year, pp. numbers of pages)
For MLA use this:
Last name of author, First name of Author. Title of Book. Place Published: Publisher. Year. Print.
MLA also uses footnotes instead of in text:
(Author, pp.#)
3.When leaning a particular a term paper guideline always remember to do your research. Try and spend some quality time in the library learning the topic you are writing about. Really read and saturate your brain with all the available information. Try and become an expert on the topic you are writing about.
4.The biggest problem I see when grading papers is the lack of editing. Make sure you thoroughly edit all of your papers. Really go over it with a fine tooth comb. This can be hard. It is very difficult to edit your own work. Most schools have free tutoring available. You can also have a peer look it over. But spelling and grammar errors are a no no and can severely lower your grade.
It was very difficult trying to teach my students the basic guidelines of a term paper. They were really having a hard time grasping the idea of it. Like I said there are rules for everything. Once they understood they basic rules of writing a research paper the rest came easily for them.
