I am not a social butterfly. I don’t do so well in social situations. Going to dances and parties are just not my thing. Because of this I was a senior in high school and had never had one relationship. I had never even kissed a guy. Not even on the cheek. I thought of myself as decent enough looking. I was an athlete and a pretty smart person. I guess I just never put myself in situations were anyone would want to be with me. It was odd at times. I think once you establish yourself one way it’s hard to come out of that rut. I had been this way since I was a freshman. Now as senior most guys just saw me as the girl who didn’t date so no one ever approached me. One afternoon in English class as we were taking down the criteria for our next term paper, Ms. Daniels, the vice principal, walked in with the hottest guy I had ever seen in my life. She introduced him to Mr. Champion, our English teacher, who then introduced him to our class. His name was Ryan. He was so good looking, dark hair and eyes and tall. He had a great athletic build and he walked with such confidence. He took a seat and the girls around me were all bustling with excitement.

I knew I didn’t have a chance with Ryan. He was far too good looking to want to be with me. He quickly became Mr Popularity and all the girls were vying for his attention. I began to admire him over term papers in English class. He didn’t sit too far from me so I would occasionally glance over at him. The few times he met my eye I quickly looked away.

One afternoon Mr Champion was going over a narrative term paper. He explained how the thesis must be visible in every paragraph of the paper. He also told us how he has been getting poorly edited research papers and asked that we triple edit each paper before turning it in. He also stated that the analysis research was really slipping. We would have to work harder on this. I was taking tons of notes as Mr. Champion spoke when a note was slipped on my desk. This had rarely happened to me and I quickly opened it.

Mr Champion glanced over at me and asked what I was reading. I looked up at him shocked. That was when Ryan chimed in and said “It looks like she’s reading a narrative term paper, sir.” I looked over as him. He had the best smile and it was aimed right at me. The not simply said “what are you doing this weekend -Ryan.”

I quickly folded it up and continued taking notes on the narrative term paper. Ryan caught me quickly after class. I was so nervous as he spoke to me I wanted to run. But I tried to stay confident and listen to him. He told me he’d noticed me the first time he saw me and was wondering why I had never talked to him.

That weekend I went out on my first date with Ryan. I felt so awkward. He had so much confidence I really wanted to know what he saw in me. Finally I just asked him why he sent me that narrative term paper. He laughed casually and told me that he thought I was beautiful, strong and was really happy that I didn’t try so hard. He told me that I was just me and he really liked that. I just continued to stare at him in awe. He was gorgeous and I felt gorgeous being with him.

I’m a vegetarian, and really pro animal rights. I recycle, keep the lights down, turn the faucet off when I’m brushing my teeth and really try and walk when I can. I even purchased a hybrid car. I always thought I was a pretty good earth friendly person. Until I met my friend Stacy. She was a vegan, and has protested in front of zoos and circuses for animal rights. She used candles at home and cooked over a wood burning stove. Stacy actually had some sort of contraption in her home that recycled water. And of course she didn’t own a car but walked or biked everywhere. Our senior year in college we had to write a final English research paper on something we were most passionate about. Stacy wrote a global warming term paper.

I loved Stacy but I just felt like this was another way for her to get on her soap box. Stacy wasn’t a passive tree hugger she could be a bit mean at times. I have watched her yell at the driver of a horse drawn carriage and chew her sister out for throwing away an aluminum. She refused to drive in a car that had leather interior and yelled at one of her friends for ordering veal. The problem was Stacy would go, but never ever quietly. I knew her global warming term paper would be amazing. I skimmed through her outline trying to get some inspiration for what kind of term paper I would write.

Stacy’s global warming term paper started really strong. She had a strong introduction where she had six main points that she carefully summarized in a strong thesis. She had at least two sources per point and sited them in the MLA format. Her term paper even included a ton of analysis research. The conclusion of her global warm paper was incredible since she was actually writing about something she loved and had a passion for.

Stacy received an A on her global warming term paper. She lover her paper so much she began passing out copies of it on the street corner. It was actually pretty funny. Instead of a tiny pamphlet Stacy was passing out a huge thirty page term paper to anyone who would take it, which was not very many. I wondered how she justified killing so many trees.

That afternoon my cell phone died and I needed to borrow some notes from Stacy. I stopped by her apartment and rang the door bell. She yelled come in, I walked into her apartment and there was Stacy eating a huge steak. Her global warming term paper was on the coffee table and every single light was on in her apartment. She jumped up when she saw me. And quickly tried to explain the situation.

I did learn one thing from Stacy’s global warming term paper I learned what to write my term paper on, hypocrisy. I couldn’t believe how Stacy had fooled me. I was angry and frustrated but I channeled my energy into a stellar final term paper.

Simon is my best friend. I’ve known him since we were in diapers. He’s a great guy. I have always been able to relate more with men than women. Maybe it’s because I grew up with four older brothers but I really never got along very well with women. I think most women are petty, controlling and a bit too emotional. Which is why Simon and I always got along so well. He was the most relaxed person I knew. For years people thought Simon and I were dating. Somewhere in the back of my mind I did always like him but I knew all we would ever be were friends. I think I just knew too much about him. We were both fiction writers who really had aspirations of writing the great American novel someday. But I was terrible at writing term papers. Simon didn’t understand why I didn’t get it. He often laughed at me when I got a C on a paper. I was having an especially hard time when we had learned how to cite term papers.

Our freshman year in high school was when we really had to write a bunch of research papers. Simon told me he would teach me how to cite term papers but he had many other things on his mind. High school was were are relationship really began to change. It wasn’t just Simon and I. It was Simon and what ever girl seemed to be fawning over him. I started to look at Simon differently. He was now at least six feet tall. He was a runner so he had a very lean and muscular build and his face had really thin out from the days I used to call him chubby cheeks. For once I was not the only woman in his life. I began having to listen to Simon talk about other girls. It was hard not to feel resentment and jealousy.

Our teacher told us that our next term paper would not only require some key analysis research but we would also have to learn how to cite term papers. Simon helped me by creating a quick cheat sheet for citing books:

APA (in text):

MLA (footnotes):

Author. Title of Nook. State: Publisher, Year

After Simon taught me how to cite term papers he wanted to get something to eat. We drove to one of the local restaurants like we had done so many times before but something had changed. I could tell he was starting to see me differently to but was just trying to keep things the same. He looked over at me as we came to stop light and asked what I was thinking about. Simon had asked me that so many times before but today it really took on a different meaning. He even smelled different and he looked great I could see his chest tighten as I looked up at him. I decided to go in for the kill and asked him, “Simon, do you like me.” He stared straight ahead. I could see that I had made him really uncomfortable. He swallowed and said, “you know I do.” We drove in silence after that. Simon drove right past the the restaurant we were suppose to stop at. I never would have believed that him teaching me how to site term papers would lead to this conversation. What ever happened I knew I was happy I had finally approached the subject. And I think Simon was too.

My mom always told me to never underestimate the power of presentation. No matter who you are or what you are doing the presentation is key. If you want respect act like you deserve it. Don’t buy a car in your pajamas, don’t go on a job interview without a hair cut and don’t leave the house without at lease some foundation. My mom told me the way you look says a lot. It also gives you confidence. Heels make you stand a little straighter and mascara helps you to look the other person right in the eye. My mom took and passed the bar exam while wearing a three piece suit.I took what she said to heart. I paid attention to the way I looked. I got dressed everyday no matter what and I never just sat around in my pajamas. Looks, nowadays means everything. So when I had to write my final research paper for college I got up everyday got dressed put on make up and wrote my paper. And of course I looked long and hard for the perfect term paper cover.

My friends always laughed at me when I showed up everyday to cafeteria for breakfast fully dressed and wearing makeup. My friend Jimmy often said he had never seen my face without make and Paula always asked if I owned a pair of flat shoes. I brushed off their comments. Dressing this way gave me more confidence and self esteem. It also helped when I got up everyday and worked on my final term paper for college. I worked really hard on the paper often spending long hours doing key analysis research in the library. My study breaks consisted of online shopping for the right term paper cover. It was hard. Did I want to go colorful or professional? Did I want clear? Did I want to three hole punch my paper? There were many decisions to choose from.

Aside from looking for a term paper cover I also wanted the cover page to look professional. I decided not to use any fancy fonts or make my words very big. My term paper cover would be clear and concise with the title in the middle and my name underneath. The bottom right section would include my name again, the date, name of the professor and title of the class. I wanted to keep it simple and classic.

The day I finished my final term paper, the paper that would determine whether I would graduate or not, I dressed in my best business suite, put my makeup on carefully and picked out some great jewelry pieces. I really needed to feel good today. I then printed out my paper. No sooner did I hit the print button did my computer freeze. I pressed every key but couldn’t get my computer to work again. The next thing I knew it looked like a virus was attacking it as I slowly saw all my files begin to delete. I stared at the printer making sure all the pages had printed. The next thing I knew my term paper was due in less than twenty minutes. I shoved my paper into the term paper cover I had purchased the night before and began running to my class room. I really shouldn’t have worn heels that day because I then tripped on an uneven sidewalk, fell and hit my face against the ground hard. I looked up to see my term paper land in a puddle of water and dirt. As I got up and rushed over to the only copy I had of my final term paper I realized that my paper had been saved by the cover. It had shielded the mud, soot and water. I turned my paper in with a bloody lip, ripped slacks and without the term paper cover. Sometimes presentation isn’t everything.
