How To Format Your Term Paper?
A Detailed View of Formats Used In Term Papers
While writing a term paper you should keep in mind it’s presentation. A suitably formatted term paper generates interest of the reader while a loosely written one can ruin the impression no matter how good the content is. Thus always keep in mind that the format of the term paper plays an imperative role in the evaluation of the paper. The presentation of the paper is important, as the reader can tend to get frustrated if the paper is written in haphazard manner. Many students tend to neglect on this very important factor and thus loose marks although their subject matter is admirable.
A term paper format always consists of an introduction paragraph, body and a conclusion. However how long each of these is depends upon the length of the paper itself. For instance in term papers containing five paragraphs or less you don’t want the introduction or conclusion to be too long. Just limit them both to one paragraph each and rest focus on the main content that is the body. But when writing a term paper has a length of multiple pages the introduction is longer and is used to give the reader an abstract view of the paper topic.
The most common types of formats are:
America Psycological Association (APA) formatting is used mostly in case of researched based papers. It has 4 parts namely the cover, abstract, content and the references at the end. This type of formatting uses a font size of ten to twelve points with font being Times New Roman. Also the margin should be of 1 inch on all the sides. Although the references are to be mentioned only at the end, in text citations can be given.
Harvard Formatting Style is the format that gives importance to the mention of author’s name, publication’ name, year of publication as well as the place of publication. If the name of the author is not available then it is important to mention the title of the work. This type is found in almost all the textbooks.
Modern Language Association (MLA) uses a format similar to that of Harvard or APA but the difference lies in the fact that the heading of term paper in this type of format contains the second name of the author and the page number follows. It is one the most used formats because it enables the student to mention his/her name, roll number, and other things required by providing a four-space gap after the title.
These three are the most often used term paper formats used all over the world and are also usually suggested by the schools and colleges.
